HL Deb 15 July 1994 vol 556 c120WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are their estimates of current and predicted food shortages in Sudan, the Horn and sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, and what action they are taking bilaterally and multilaterally to ensure adequate supplies to those at risk.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The World Food Programme estimate that over 2.38 million tonnes of emergency food aid will be needed in sub-Saharan Africa in 1994. Of this, 1.5 million tonnes is needed in the Horn of Africa, including 438,200 tonnes in Sudan. Since January, we have committed over 150,000 tonnes of food aid to sub-Saharan Africa, including nearly 120,000 tonnes to the Horn of Africa, of which 40,000 tonnes has been committed to Sudan. I have also urged donor colleagues to respond positively to outstanding needs.
