HC Deb 11 July 1994 vol 246 c450W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will provide a table showing the running costs of his Department in each region for each year since 1987–88.

Mr. Robin Squire

In the years prior to 1993–94 HM inspectorate maintained small local offices in each region, but the Department as currently constituted does not operate a regional structure; its headquarters functions are carried out in offices in London and Darlington. In 1993–94 the Department's running costs expenditure was split broadly 70:30 between the London and Darlington offices. Detailed information on the actual spend between each office for that and previous years could only be provided at disproportionate cost. The net administration costs for the Department in each year since 1987–88 were as follows:

£'000s
1987–88 58,594
1988–89 67,402
1989–90 74,501
1990–91 85,067
1991–92 102,414
1992–93 108,370
1993–94 88,370

The 1993–94 figure is provisional and reflects changes in the machinery of Government.
