HC Deb 27 January 1994 vol 236 cc385-6W
Mr. Ainger

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans she has to reduce the British quarantine period for animals with rabies vaccination certificates imported from rabies-free countries; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Soames

The Government have no plans to reduce the present six months quarantine requirement for imported pet dogs, cats and a wide range of other rabies susceptible animals. Separate arrangements were agreed under the Balai directive (92/65/EEC) for commercially traded animals from other member states in the European Community. A statement on those changes was given in the reply to the hon. Member for Richmond, Yorks (Mr. Hague) by my right hon. Friend the Member for Suffolk Coastal (Mr. Gummer) on 16 June 1992,Official Report, column 455–56.
