To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many prohibition notices were issued against passenger carrying vehicles in 1992–93; and how many of them were(a) immediate prohibitions, (b) delayed prohibitions and (c) defect notices.

Mr. Key

In the financial year 1992–93 the vehicle inspectorate examined 39,065 public service and other passenger carying vehicles. The examinations resulted in these vehicles being issued with 1,825 immediate prohibitions, 1,363 delayed and 4,275 defect notices.

The total number of staff employed in the traffic area offices is 447.5 and the total salary cost is £6.3 million. The number of traffic area office staff by grade and salary cost is as follows:
