Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many prohibition notices were issued in respect of large goods vehicles in 1992–93; and how many were(a) immediate, (b) delayed or (c) defect notices.

Mr. Key

During 1992–93, the vehicle inspectorate examined 196,475 large goods vehicles. The examinations resulted in 11,041 immediate prohibitions, 11,040 delayed prohibitions and 18,379 defect notices being issued.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list by traffic area office(a) the number of goods vehicle operator licences and (b) renewal applications for goods vehicle operator licences refused on environmental grounds over the last five years.
