HC Deb 26 January 1994 vol 236 cc297-8W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish a table showing spending on rail infrastructure for each country in the EC per capita for the latest year available.

Mr. Freeman

No. It is difficult to make realistic spending comparisons between railway systems because of differences in areas such as accounting methods, definitions of infrastructure and terrain. However, last January, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Community, published "Transport Annual Statistics 1970–1990" which gives, at page 14 of the publication, infrastructure spending for seven of the 12 EC countries up to 1989. A copy of this publication has been placed in the House of Commons Library.
