HL Deb 20 January 1994 vol 551 cc56-7WA
Lord Jenkin of Roding

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What were the total sums reclaimed in respect of statutory sickness payments for each year from the introduction of the present scheme by employers whose total annual national insurance liability (employers' and employees' payments) were in the following bands:

  • less than £1,000
  • £1,000 to less than £6,000
  • £6,000 to less than £11,000
  • £11,000 to less than £16,000
  • £16,000 to less than £20,000
  • £20,000 to less than £30,000
  • Over £30,000:
and how many employers there were in each of the above bands for each year from the introduction of the present scheme.

Viscount Astor

The information is not available in the form requested. Based on a sample of around 17,000 employers in 1989–90, we estimate that around 5 per cent. of the total statutory sick pay spend is paid to employers whose total national insurance contribution liability is less than £20,000 per year. The estimate is subject to considerable uncertainty. We estimate that there are 750,000 employers in Great Britain whose national insurance contribution liability is £20,000 or less in 1993–94.
