Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many prison chaplains have been trained in the use of the LIDS computer system; in which prisons has there been no training of chaplains, and what is the budget for training of chaplains and other staff respectively in the year 1993–94.

Earl Ferrers

Responsibility for the subject of this Question has been delegated to the Prison Service and its Director General, Mr. Derek Lewis. The Director General has therefore arranged for a response to the Question and the letter is given below.

Letter to the Lord Avebury from the Director of Personnel and Services, Mr. A. J. Butler, dated 20th January 1994:

Lord Ferrers has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question asking about training for chaplains in the Prison Service.

Details of the particular training provided to individual chaplains are not held centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. The overall training budget for the Prison Service in 1993–94 is £3.2 million. The budget for chaplaincy training is £34,000.
