HC Deb 20 January 1994 vol 235 cc749-50W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans he has to require car manufacturers to stamp cars with the date of manufacture and car dealers to state that date on the sale documents.

Mr. Sainsbury

Neither I nor my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade currently have any such plans.

By law, all motor cars must at some stage during the manufacturing process, be stamped with a vehicle identification number. Consumers can therefore request dealers to decode this number and provide the date at which it was stamped on the vehicle.
