To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of car thefts recorded(a) in 1979 and (b) in the latest year for which figures are available.

§ Mr. Charles Wardle
In 1979 there were 309,245 recorded thefts of motor vehicles in England and Wales.
In the latest 12-month period for which figures are available—July 1992 to June 1993—the number of thefts was 614,560.
