HC Deb 11 January 1994 vol 235 cc73-6W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many grant-maintained schools have been approved so far in the secondary sector.

Mr. Robin Squire

To date, 559 secondary schools have been approved for self-governing—grant-maintained —status.

Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many pupils are now being taught in grant-maintained schools; and what is the expected number by August 1994.

Mr. Robin Squire

More than half a million pupils are currently being educated in over 800 self-governing—grant-maintained—schools.

Over 160 more schools have already been approved to become self-governing later this year or have applications in the pipeline, and there is continuing demand for parental ballots on the question of self-governing status. The number of pupils in self-governing schools will therefore continue to grow. The rate of growth will depend on the views of parents in ballots, and on the merits of the applications submitted to my right hon. Friend.

Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will list(a) the political control and (b) the number of grant-maintained schools in each local education authority.

Mr. Robin Squire

Key:
Con = Conservative
Ind = Independent
Lab = Labour
LD = Liberal Democrat
NOC = No overall control

Notes:

1. No Overall Control. Such councils are not controlled by any party or group of parties.

2. Where several parties are shown—Lab/LD/Ind—the authority is being run by a joint administration of some sort. This does not mean that there will necessarily have been a formal pact. In several cases the joint administration will be as a result of an informal understanding of some kind.
