19. Mr. Lewis

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what measures he proposes to mitigate the effect of redundancies announced in the north west so far in the current year.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

In the north west region, as elsewhere, the Employment Service and the 14 north-west training and enterprise councils will continue to deliver a wide range of employment, enterprise and training programmes to help people find the best and quickest route back to employment.

20. Mr. Mike O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he is taking to create jobs in the west midlands.

Miss Widecombe

The Department's aim is to promote a free and flexible labour market to encourage employment in the west midlands region as elsewhere.
