HL Deb 10 February 1994 vol 551 cc131-2WA
The Earl of Kimberley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In view of Romanian-French co-operation in both military and civilian matters, whether it is now time that they took the opportunity to improve Anglo-Romanian trade.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We are making every effort to improve our trade with Romania. British exports to Romania in 1993 show an increase of about 45 per cent. over 1992 (from £64.3 million to £93.4 million). The British Embassy in Bucharest has a well established Commercial Section able to handle all commercial and trade work and is well placed to assist British exporters. Export Credit Guarantee Department cover is also available. The Department of Trade and Industry, the CBI, the London Chamber of Commerce and a number of British companies plan to establish a British Romanian Trade Committee in the near future. Mr. Neil Hamilton, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry will visit Bucharest in May this year.
