HL Deb 10 February 1994 vol 551 c131WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the UN General Assembly is being successful in securing the establishment of a comprehensive human rights monitoring system in Iraq; and what instructions they have given on this matter to UK representatives.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Iraq continues to refuse access to human rights monitors wishing to enter that country. The UN Centre for Human Rights is now interviewing Iraqi refugees to gain information about human rights abuses in Iraq.

UK representatives at the United Nations continue to press hard for human rights in Iraq. We will press for a strong resolution on Iraq at the current session of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
