To ask the President of the Board of Trade what information he has on the value of(a) British and (b) Japanese arms exports in the most recent years for which comparable figures are available; and what proportion this represents of total exports from those countries.

Information on United Kingdom defence exports can be found in table 1.11 of UK Defence Statistics 1993 edition, a copy of which is available in the Library of the House. For 1992, United Kingdom exports of identified defence equipment amounted to £1,506 million, representing 1.4 per cent. of total visible exports. Comparable figures for Japan are not available and could be produced only at disproportionate cost.
