HC Deb 02 February 1994 vol 236 c743W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what strategy is being considered by the Welsh Office to combat the effects of uplands acidification; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

A significant programme of action is under way in the United Kingdom to reduce the emissions which cause acid rain. This includes measures to reduce emissions from the power industry, the fitting of catalytic converters to all new cars and the implementation of pollution controls under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

In addition, the Welsh Office, in conjunction with the National Rivers Authority and the Countryside Council for Wales, is promoting research and monitoring on the environmental impact of acid deposition in upland Wales.
