HC Deb 01 February 1994 vol 236 cc597-8W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what progress there has been in the construction of an International Peto Institute in Budapest; when she expects building work to begin; when Her Majesty's Government's obligation to help fund this project will expire; and what assessment she has made of whether the funding pledged by Her Majesty's Government to this project could be more effectively spent in creating an equivalent facility in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Bowis

Under the agreement between the United Kingdom and Hungarian Governments, further payments are dependent upon the commencement of construction of the International Peto Institute, for which no date has yet been set by the International Peto Foundation. Under this agreement, the institute has to be operational by February 1996 to avoid repayment of all or part of the payments made. Facilities for conductive education are already developing in the United Kingdom.
