HC Deb 20 December 1994 vol 251 c1159W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many safe areas were created by the United Nations for the protection of civilians in the Gulf war; and how many of these were not held by Muslim armed forces.

Mr. Goodlad

There were no safe areas created by the United Nations during the Gulf war. But in April 1991, a safe haven was created in northern Iraq to protect the civilian population, the vast majority of whom were Muslims of Kurdish origin.
