HC Deb 05 December 1994 vol 251 cc68-9W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the budget allocated by his Department and associated agencies for each of the next five years for, and how many staff or staff hours equivalent have been allocated to achieve the objectives of, the programme for action to achieve equality of opportunity in the civil service for disabled people.

Mr. Redwood

Departmental expenditure in support of its programme of action for people with a disability and the civil service programme for action to achieve equality of opportunity for people with a disability includes costs associated with a number of elements such as the procurement of specialist equipment, positive action training, adaptations of accommodation and buildings, and staff costs and cannot be disaggregated.

The number of staff or staff hours equivalent, allocated to achieve the objectives of the programmes for action cannot be estimated. Successful implementation depends on the co-operation and commitment of a number of staff including the equal opportunities officer, the training officer, personnel specialists, accommodation officers and line managers and also involves consultation with disabled staff.

Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number and percentage of disabled people employed by his Department and associated agencies over the past five years; and what are the projected figures for the next five years.

Mr. Redwood

The number and percentage of registered disabled people in my Department over the last five years is as follows:

Year Number Percentage
1990 32 1.4
1991 30 1.3
1992 37.5 1.5
1993 40 1.5
1994 37 1.6

My Department also employs a number of unregistered disabled people equivalent to 2.1 per cent. of staff.

Projected figures are not available.
