Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will publish for each year since 1987 the number in England of(a) pupils in assisted places schemes in secondary schools, (b) pupils in secondary schools in total and (c) the number in (a) as a percentage of (b).

Mr. Forth

The assisted places scheme is run at 295 independent schools in England. The number of pupils holding assisted places and the total number of pupils of secondary school age in all schools is given in the following table:
