To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many kidney transplants were carried out(a) in 1979 and (b) in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Sackville

The number of kidney transplants performed in 1979 was 842; in 1993 the number had almost doubled to 1,576—provisional.
