To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people in Scotland are on housing benefit; and what is the total annual cost.

Mr. Hague

At the end of November 1993 there were approximately 550,000 live claims to housing benefit in Scotland. The estimated total annual cost for 1993–94 was £706 million.
