HC Deb 25 April 1994 vol 242 c49W
20. Lady Olga Maitland

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to review drug eclucalion in schools.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

All schools have to provide a curriculum which promotes pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and all pupils have to be taught about the effects of drug abuse on health as part of the national curriculum. It is for schools themselves to decide how to organise and provide drugs education. School inspectors consider the effectiveness of health education as part of their duty to report on the provision of education in schools.

The Welsh Office has issued a guide on "Drug Misuse and the Young", which contains advice on drugs education. Under the grants for education support and training programme, we have made grants available to local education authorities for measures to promote personal and social education, including education on health and drugs.
