HC Deb 13 April 1994 vol 241 c173W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment which EC member states have no specific legislation on zoos; and what steps he takes to ensure the welfare of animals exported from the United Kingdom to zoos in such countries.

Mr. Atkins

According to our latest information, I understand that Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain do not have specific zoo legislation.

Live animals must be transported in accordance with the International Air Transport Association's live animals regulations. The welfare of animals in zoos is a matter for individual member states.
