To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many of the responses to his consultation paper, "London, Making the Best Better", referred to the need for a democratically elected citywide authority for London.

Some 17 per cent. of the people responding to the consultation exercise said they would like to see the creation of a single elected authority for London and a further 6 per cent. made a specific reference to the GLC. In addition, 5 per cent. of respondents mentioned some form of single strategic planning authority for London, 1 per cent. an elected mayor, and 2 per cent. a combination of two or more of the suggestions.
