HC Deb 29 October 1993 vol 230 cc817-8W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many copies of his departmental publication, "The European Community: Facts and Fairytales" have been published; at what cost; to whom and to what organisations it has been distributed(a) within the United Kingdom and (b) abroad; and if he will make a statement on its intended purpose.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

A total of 30,000 copies of the booklet "European Community: Facts and Fairytales" have been published so far, at a cost of £10,787. Copies have been sent to Members of Parliament, members of the House of Lords, United Kingdom MEPs, the media, including in Brussels, chambers of commerce, information offices, consumer organisations, women's associations, EC and EFTA embassies in London, major United Kingdom posts abroad and to all individuals who have asked for copies. Some 16,000 copies have been sent out so far. The booklet is intended to help inform public opinion about the Community and, as my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs said in the foreword, to fill in some of the gaps which occur when the facts behind the stories are not explained.
