§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of gross domestic product was committed to Britain's nuclear deterrent in each year since 1988.
§ Mr. HanleyFigures for the years in question are available only for the strategic nuclear deterrent. Those relating to the years up to and including 1991–92 are derived from tables published in the statistical volume of the annual "Statement on the Defence Estimates" prior to 1992. The figures for 1992–93 and 1993–94 are based on ad hoc exercises to identify the capital and operating costs associated directly with the strategic deterrent.
