HC Deb 27 October 1993 vol 230 cc695-6W
Ms Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the cost of the consultants merit award system in each of the last five years; and what plans she has to change the system.

Dr. Mawhinney

In 1990–91, financial returns showed a total of £41,370,322 paid in distinction awards to consultants in the national health service in England. The further information requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The arrangements for distinction awards are regularly kept under review.
