To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if she will give details of the survey on the abundance and distribution of small cetaceans in the North sea; and which other countries are involved.

Mr. Jack

In 1993–94 my Department will contribute some £167,000 towards five cetacean research projects. The projects are:

  1. 1. Population biology of cetaceans
  2. 2. The effects of environmental change on whale populations
  3. 3. Interaction between cetaceans and man
  4. 4. ASCOBANS survey of cetaceans in the North sea and Baltic
  5. 5. Enhancing the acoustic detectability of fishing nets.
