HL Deb 20 October 1993 vol 549 c50WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What limits, if any, are being placed on the transfer by NATO countries of offensive weapons to Greece and to Turkey, and what are, in each case, the quantities involved.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

To date, Turkey has received 837 tanks, 550 armoured combat vehicles and 72 artillery pieces from Allies under the NATO "cascading" programme. Greece has received 843 tanks, 150 armoured combat vehicles and 255 artillery pieces. These transfers must be accommodated within the terms of the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, which limits the amount of equipment States Parties may hold in key conventional arms categories.
