To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many hostel spaces for the homeless in London have been supported by his Department in 1990–91, 1991–92, 1992–93 and for the current year; and if he will make a statement.

Under the rough sleepers initiative in central London, my Department funds voluntary organisations and housing associations to provide temporary hostels for homeless people. The total number of bed spaces made available in each of the specified years is as follows.

In addition, my Department allocates resources, through the Housing Corporation, to housing associations for the provision of bedspaces in shared housing/hostels for the single homeless in central London. New units provided by the Housing Corporation in each of the specified years are as follows.

The Housing Corporation also continues to provide support for 7,381 places for homeless people in London that were approved before the introduction of a new funding system in 1991.
