Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the level of unemployment in each EC country(a) in January 1993 and (b) at the latest date for which figures are available; and what was (b) as a percentage of (a).

Up-to-date and internationally comparable unemployment figures are available only in the form of rates and are based on the ILO definition of unemployment. These figures are published by EUROSTAT in its monthly "Unemployment Bulletin", copies of which are available in the Library. The table shows the latest available information.
