HC Deb 29 November 1993 vol 233 cc361-2W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what representations he has made to his counterparts in NATO, the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Western European Union in seeking to gain support for strengthening the United Nations, as indicated in paragraph 50 of the Government's reply to the fourth report of the Defence Committee of Session 1992–93, House of Commons Paper 988.

Mr. Hanley

The Government see a clear role for organisations such as NATO, the CSCE and WEU in supporting the conflict management and prevention activities of the United Nations. All three are already providing such support, in the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere. Considerable work is also under way within these organisations on how they might best contribute to and support United Nations activities in the future. The United Kingdom is a full and active participant in this work.
