HC Deb 29 November 1993 vol 233 c361W
Mr. Cummings

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the rates of pay of British forces serving in central Bosnia and Germany; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hanley

United Kingdom service personnel are paid the same rates of,basic pay irrespective of where they are serving.

Total remuneration will however vary depending on a range of factors including the allowances to which personnel are entitled. Personnel in Germany receive local overseas allowance— LOA—paid to compensate for the additional costs of living there compared to the United Kingdom. No LOA is payable in the former Yugoslavia but personnel deployed to the former Yugoslavia from Germany continue to receive a significant element of their LOA in recognition of their continuing financial commitments in Germany—70 per cent. for married personnel, 40 per cent. for single personnel.

In addition, married personnel in the former Yugoslavia are entitled to separation allowance and all personnel receive the United Nations set allowances to cover incidental expenses and rest and recreation leave. Food and accommodation charges have been waived for all personnel in the former Yugoslavia in recognition of the conditions under which they are serving.
