HC Deb 25 November 1993 vol 233 c153W
17. Mr. Hawkins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what research his Department has conducted into the effectiveness of custodial sentences in preventing crime.

Mr. Maclean

The research and statistics department of the Home Office regularly publishes material which is relevant to the consideration of the effectiveness of sentencing.

A recent Home Office study of 193 burglars given community service orders in 1987 produced results suggesting that imprisoning them for one year could have prevented between three and 13 crimes per burglar.
