HC Deb 25 November 1993 vol 233 cc206-7W
Mr. Hendry

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment in how many cases he has taken statutory action against local authorities in relation to compulsory competitive tendering of council services.

Mr. Baldry

The table lists the number of such cases from January 1989 to the end of September 1993. It gives full details of the cases in the period July to September 1993, summary figures for the year to date, and the cumulative total from 1989.

I am publishing this information today and propose to issue regular up-date reports.

The table shows that in the period January to September 1993, the Secretary of State served 17 notices and 9 directions relating to anti-competitive tendering of council services; and 80 notices and nine directions relating to the financial failure by local authorities' direct service organisations to achieve the required financial objectives.
