HC Deb 25 November 1993 vol 233 cc205-6W
Mr. Heald

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has for the future of the Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment.

Mr. Gummer

The Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment was appointed for an initial two-year term in May 1991. It proved an extremely valuable forum for strategic dialogue between Government and industry in environmental issues, and produced a series of practical, action-orientated recommendations in its three progress reports.

In light of the importance of the committee's work, I am delighted to announce that my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade and I have appointed a successor committee under the chairmanship of Derek Wanless, Group Chief Executive of National Westminster Bank. The reconstituted committee met for the first time yesterday. Its membership is as follows:

helping to meet the wider goal of sustainable development. Local authorities should carry out plan appraisals to ensure that they contribute to this aim.
