HC Deb 05 November 1993 vol 231 c602W
Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what response he has made to statements from the World Health Organisation office in Belgrade complaining of a severe shortage of medical supplies; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Sanctions applied to Serbia and Montenegro under UN Security Council resolutions 757 and 820 specifically exclude foods and medicines subject to notification procedures in the United Nations sanctions committee. We have worked hard in this committee to ensure that genuine humanitarian shipments are expedited.

Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what diplomatic efforts Her Majesty's Government is making to persuade other members of the Security Council to increase their funding of UN appeals in former Yugoslavia and the trans-Caucus region.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We keep in regular touch with major donors, including those which are Security Council members, on the progress of UN appeals and constantly encourage UN bodies to look for new donors.
