HC Deb 05 November 1993 vol 231 cc519-20W
Mrs. Ewing

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what estimate has been made of the value of contracts awarded in the Lebanese reconstruction programme up to the nearest available date in electricity, water and sewerage, communications, transport, health and education sectors; and what share in each sector has been won by British companies.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 4 November 1993]: Lebanon has, reportedly, awarded a number of contracts as part of its redevelopment plans. These are, however, at an early stage. We do not yet have access to figures that would enable us to estimate their value for the sectors listed, or the share of such contracts which might have been secured by British companies. United Kingdom exports to Lebanon totalled £92 million in 1992 and have grown by about 40 per cent. so far this year.
