To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what was the total amount awarded by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in each of the past five years; what was(a) the average award concerning violent criminal acts against the person and (b) the average award to victims of rape;

(2) how many cases were judged by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board in each of the past five years; and what was the average waiting time for the completion of an application.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answers 1 November 1993]: The latest available information is summarised in the table. This is taken from the published annual reports of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, copies of which are held in the Library of the House. The board does not collate details of the average time taken to complete claims, but percentages of cases resolved within various periods of time are given in the board's annual reports. All awards made by the board are in respect of crimes of violence, but information about the average award made to victims of rape is not recorded centrally.
