§ 29. Mr. StreeterTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on progress towards democracy in South Africa.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydWe welcome the passage of legislation by the South African parliament on 23 September to establish the transitional executive council. This is a tremendously important step and puts South Africa firmly on the road to non-racial democracy. We now await agreement on the interim consititution and the Bill of Rights, following which the TEC will come into operation and prepare the way for democratic elections.
