HC Deb 02 November 1993 vol 231 c172W
Ms Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list those public investment projects within her Department's responsibility which have attracted private capital and have been commenced since the 1992 autumn statement.

Mr. Sackville

The private finance initiative is helping the national health service to capture the skills and expertise of the private sector to give better services, higher quality and more resources for the NHS. Private finance will mean additional capital spending on top of the record £2.1 billion public capital this year. New delegated limits for the NHS have broken down bureaucratic obstacles that were inhibiting effective use of private finance. Twelve projects have been approved by the Department of Health since the 1992 autumn statement, as shown in the table. Health authorities and NHS trusts now have authority to approve other projects themselves where the sums involved are less than certain prescribed limits; as a result many further projects are also under discussion.
