HC Deb 20 May 1993 vol 225 c287W
Mr. Austin-Walker

To ask the President of the Board of Trade, pursuant to his answer of 13 May,Official Report, column 533, what boundaries he intends to use in examining the constituent parts of London for consideration of designating assisted areas; and on what basis he will calculate figures for unemployment in those areas.

Mr. Sainsbury

In the review of the assisted areas map our consideration of large travel-to-work areas, including London, is taking into account relevant facts about all their constituent parts. Travel-to-work areas are the smallest areas for which reliable unemployment rates are available. We are, however, taking into account the unemployment data which are available at ward and local authority level, such as numbers of unemployed. The review consultation document made it clear that other criteria, including inner city and urban problems, will also be considered.
