To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) how many licences were issued for the import into the United Kingdom of captive-bred birds from Tanzania in each year since 1989;

(2) how many (a) captive-bred birds and (b) consignments of captive-bred birds were imported into the United Kingdom from Tanzania in each year since 1989;

(3) how many applications for licences to import captive-bred birds from Tanzania have been received by his Department since March 1991; and how many are currently pending.

Information on the importation into the United Kingdom of captive birds from Tanzania is as follows:

Notes:

1. MAFF statistics do not differentiate between captive bred and wild caught birds.

2. The issue of licences for import of captive birds from Tanzania was suspended in March 1991. It was subsequently agreed that licences could be issued with effect from 5 May 1993.

Since March 1991 the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has received three applications for import licences for captive birds from Tanzania. No import licences were issued.
