Ms Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage who is responsible for compliance with(a) fire regulations and (b) health and safety regulations in each of the historic palaces.

Mr. Key

Responsibility for compliance with fire safety legislation and health and safety legislation in the royal palaces for which I have a financial responsibility rests with the following bodies:

Royal Household

  • Buckingham Palace
  • Windsor Castle
  • St. James's Palace
  • Clarence House
  • Kensington Palace (private apartments)

Historic Royal Palaces Agency (an Executive Agency responsible to the Secretary of State for National Heritage)

  • Hampton Court Palace
  • Tower of London
  • Kensington Palace (State Apartments)
  • Banqueting House, Whitehall
  • Kew Palace and
  • Queen Charlotte's Cottage.

In the Tower of London, the Royal Armouries and the Ministry of Defence have some responsibilities in the areas which they occupy.
