HC Deb 18 May 1993 vol 225 cc125-6W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what representations he has received about the future of the Everyman theatre, Liverpool; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

I have received two letters about the Everyman theatre, one from the chief executive of Liverpool city council and the other from the hon. Member. I am therefore aware of the financial difficulties confronting the theatre. However, central Government funding of the arts is undertaken, at arm's length, through the Arts Council. I understand that the council and the local authorities on Merseyside are currently engaged in constructive discussions about future funding arrangements for the Everyman and Playhouse theatres. I hope there will be a positive outcome.
