HC Deb 17 May 1993 vol 225 c69W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) men and (b) women of an ethnic minority background served as magistrates at courts in the Greater London area as of 1 May; and if he will give a breakdown of the representations at each of the magistrates courts in the Greater London area.

Mr. John M. Taylor

I have been asked to reply.

Information on the ethnic origin of all serving magistrates is not currently available. In 1992, 31 appointments—12.5 per cent. of total—were made of members of the ethnic minority community in the inner and outer London commission areas. Of these appointments nine were women and 22 men. In 1991, 28 such appointments were made—14.3 per cent. of the total—of whom 10 were women and 18 men; in 1990, 37 such appointments were made—17.2 per cent. of the total—of whom 12 were women and 25 men.
