HL Deb 13 May 1993 vol 545 cc71-2WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the main headings under which they are providing aid for development and the relief of poverty in South Africa in the current year; and what are the prospects for increasing this aid in future years.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Our aid helps disadvantaged South Africans to prepare for their rightful role in the government and economic development of post-apartheid South Africa. The main focus of our assistance is education and training. We also have programmes in rural development, health, public administration and small business development. We spent almost £10 million of bilateral aid in 1992, with a similar sum as Britain's share of European Community aid. We expect to increase our bilateral aid to support the process of political and economic development.
