§ Lord Hyltonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will list the main headings under which they are providing aid for development and the relief of poverty in South Africa in the current year; and what are the prospects for increasing this aid in future years.
§ Baroness Chalker of WallaseyOur aid helps disadvantaged South Africans to prepare for their rightful role in the government and economic development of post-apartheid South Africa. The main focus of our assistance is education and training. We also have programmes in rural development, health, public administration and small business development. We spent almost £10 million of bilateral aid in 1992, with a similar sum as Britain's share of72WA European Community aid. We expect to increase our bilateral aid to support the process of political and economic development.
