HL Deb 13 May 1993 vol 545 c71WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the present Government of Angola has been recognised by them and other principal western nations; and whether any evidence exists to show that South Africa is interfering in the internal affairs of both Angola and Mozambique; and if so, what actions will be taken to prevent interference.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

Her Majesty's Government in common with the majority of her EC partners recognises states, rather than governments. We recognised the Republic of Angola (then the People's Republic of Angola) on 18th February 1976. Other major western nations, including our EC partners recognised Angola in the same month. The United States have not yet recognised the Angolan Government. We are aware of allegations that the South African Government is supporting UNITA in Angola, but have seen no evidence to support these allegations. Nor have we seen any evidence that the South African Government is interfering in Mozambique.
