HC Deb 13 May 1993 vol 224 cc557-8W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give details of the Overseas Development Administration aid programme for Brazil; and what plans he has to augment the programme that assists Brazil's Indian population.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The main emphasis. of the Brazil programme is on environmental activities. There is a large programme of forestry support in the Amazonia region and a smaller programme of urban environmental projects. We are also involved in a number of other sectors, mainly involving human resource development. I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, North (Ms Walley) on 19 April 1993, columns37–38.

We are currently assisting indigenous people with support to six projects run by the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development and OXFAM co-financed through the joint funding scheme. We have also agreed to assist the Ministry of Indian Affairs in refitting three aircraft which are used to protect and provide services for the indigenous peoples of Brazil.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave the hon. Member for Clydebank and Milngavie (Mr. Worthington) on 7 May, column260.

We also provide debt relief on past development loans. The Commonwealth Development Corporation currently has investments totalling £72 million and covering 11 projects.

Gross public expenditure on United Kingdom aid to Indonesia since 1987–88 is as follows:
